Exchange Value
Exchange Value
This is an experiment in Equal and opposite bought ‘n made exchange value, of course it wouldn’t be a challenge if the made came before the bought, so I Ioad up on gifting myself at the Lyons Bazaar, all is home made & there are new designers with new products to eat & wear, their stories are worth an exchange value or so it feels, as I make my intuitive stops.
It takes weeks to get the idea. My own creative regeneration work in exchange for things bought for myself. How fortuitous I though of it. So I go into a pile of old sample sweaters my brother brought back from fashionista stylishness, like Milan, or the Riviera & as usual these samples have a cut or mark to stop them from going out for sale, The mark of the garment industry’s waste for marketing value exchange.
At the bazaar Shelley LaForge has come from Dacono to sell her hand spun wools made from 3 beasts. I get a huge skein thinking scarf, when I get home I rethink water, it will be art & will take the shape of water, no clue what that instant dream-thought means. Another CU artist is commanding with new combo skirt/ponchos, Merlin the Librarian is wearing one. I love the odd hems & irregular rhythms & buy one, wear it over my jeans to warm my exit.
Here’s my end result of cutting apart my brothers sample red black & white stripe wool sweater that itches so much it’s the perfect candidate to felt, only I forget the ingredient that makes it work in the top loader washing machine, Anne the felter reminds me, a huge heavy pair of jeans do the rubbing as it churns, will stop my sore knuckles & trying hot water ‘n soap & getting no shrinking. I pin, try on, voila, my exchange value stares me in the mirror with 2 pockets & bonus of two holes in a stylish place.
I’ve done it. I’ve exchanged making for spending, & paid myself back for gifting myself, double gift-exchange-value, here’s the photo. Try it.
